Police Declare Mr. Toju Okonedo Wanted Over Failure to Return After Bail in Lagos Lekki Raid
In a recent development, the Nigeria Security Force has declared Mr. Toju Okonedo, a Delta State indigene, wanted for failing to comply with the terms of his administrative bail following a police operation in Lagos.
On April 7th, 2023, security operatives raided a private event in the Lekki area of Lagos, which was allegedly linked to members of the LGBTQ community. During the operation, several individuals, including Mr. Toju Okonedo, were detained and questioned. The gathering was suspected of engaging in activities prohibited under Nigerian law, specifically in violation of the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013, which criminalizes same-sex relationships and related conduct.
Following questioning, Mr. Toju Okonedo was released on administrative bail with clear conditions to report back for further investigations. However, he has failed to return as required, prompting police to intensify efforts to locate him.
Sources say Mr. Toju Okonedo has reportedly gone into hiding, citing fears for his safety after public exposure of his alleged sexual orientation. The police are urging members of the public to assist by providing any information that could lead to his whereabouts.
