Lagos Businessman Declared Wanted Over Alleged Same-Sex Scandal as Partner Dies in Mob Attack Nigeria’s security agencies have declared 55-year-old businessman Mr. Idowu Timothy Oluwatoyin wanted in connection with a violent same-sex relationship scandal that led to public outrage and the death of his alleged partner.
According to police sources and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred on August 29, 2024, at Oluwatoyin’s Lagos residence when his wife reportedly returned unexpectedly from a family funeral and allegedly found him in a compromising position with Darlington Kehinde, a male staff member said to be his secret partner.
The discovery triggered a violent confrontation, drawing in neighbours and local vigilantes who stormed the property. While Oluwatoyin escaped, Kehinde sustained severe injuries in the mob attack and was later hospitalized. Police confirmed that before his death, Kehinde admitted to being in a same-sex relationship with the businessman, Mr. Idowu Timothy Oluwatoyin.

Authorities have issued a wanted notice for Oluwatoyin and initiated a formal investigation in accordance with Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which criminalizes same-sex relationships and carries a penalty of up to 14 years imprisonment
The case has heightened tensions in the community, with Kehinde’s family allegedly threatening retaliation. Security forces have intervened to prevent further violence.
While human rights groups have condemned the mob justice, others have urged stricter enforcement of anti-LGBTQ+ laws. Police are appealing for public assistance in locating Oluwatoyin while urging calm.
