The Nigeria Police have announced that Mr. Godwin Agbontaen Uwadiae, a 36-year-old from Uhunmwode Local Government Area in Edo State, is wanted in connection with an alleged same-sex scandal that took place during a security operation at a guest house in Benin City.
A statement from the authorities revealed that the suspect was arrested along with a male partner, Mr. Smith Idahosa, in the early hours of June 3, 2025, during a surprise raid based on intelligence about criminal activities at the location.
Eyewitnesses reported that the officers discovered both men allegedly naked and involved in homosexual acts in one of the rooms. They were arrested, photographed, and taken to the police station, where they were held for two days before being released on bail on June 5, 2025.
However, after their release, Mr. Uwadiae did not return to the police station as required and has since gone into hiding. Attempts to contact his family and sureties have been unsuccessful, and reports suggest he may have left the country.
The police have now officially declared him WANTED for offenses under Nigeria’s Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2014, which makes same-sex relationships illegal and imposes penalties of up to 14 years in prison.
The Nigeria Police are urging the public to provide any information that could help locate the suspect, Mr. Godwin Agbontaen Uwadiae.
